Improv On The Go

Matthew enrolled in his first improv class with OTC Improv in January 2010. He continues to hone his skills by taking improv classes, attending workshops and performing in front of live audiences.

• March 2017, he attended workshops at the N. C. Comedy Arts Festival, held on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill, NC. This festival has become widely recognized as one of the largest independent comedy events in the country.  
• December 2015, he attended a 3 day all intensive improv workshop at The Second City, Chicago, Illinois.  The Second City has become the world’s largest school of improvisation and sketch comedy in the world.

                 

Matthew has performed improv on stage with OTC Improv, Level I, II and Advanced classes.  

• Hand-picked by OTC Improv founder, Paul Marks, to teach improv classes throughout the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System to students enrolled in After School Enrichment Programs.  He has taught improv classes at YMCA’s, daycare centers, churches, and over 30 Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools in the Charlotte area (click here to see entire list). 

He is a graduate of The Comedy Zone’s beginners stand-up comedy course.  There he learned the fundamentals of writing and performing stand-up comedy.  He also learned methods to generate original material using aspects of his life, understanding concepts in formulating structured jokes and proper stage performance techniques. 



Matthew is approved by the North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services Division of Child Development and Early Education to provide improvisation training to child caregivers, childcare owners and their staff to help meet on-going training requirements.     

To improve his communication and leadership skills, Matthew joined Toastmasters International in 2008.  TMI is the largest organization in the world that empowers individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders.  He was awarded Toastmasters International highest level of educational achievement, Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) in December 2015. 

He currently serves as Youth Coordinator for T.A.L.K. Associates, teaching secondary school age students the art of effective speaking and positive direction communication skills.  The combination of effective speaking skills and positive direction communication skills connects closely with Common Core Speaking and Listening Standards. 

 In October 2013, Matthew was awarded, T.A.L.K. Associates Consistent Positive Direction Pinnacle Certification.  The Pinnacle Certification attests that he is skilled at using the Positive Direction Communication Skills that he teaches with 100% consistency.
